Dalia Khamissy

Photo-Festivals has decided to invite Lebanese photographer Dalia Khamissy as our 4th Crossing Point photographer-in-residence for Visa Pour l’Image 2010* (30th August to 6th September 2010).

Dalia Khamissy will undertake an intensive eight-day residency in Perpignan, during which she will share a flat with other photographers and make contact with numerous renowned practitioners in the field while enjoying the photo festival.

This residency is in partnership with the Photo Forum Beirut which we set up in collaboration with Zico House in January 2010, which would not have been possible without the contribution of Dalia Khamissy.

Biography

Born in Beirut, Dalia Khamissy graduated in Photography from the Universite Saint-Esprit Kaslik (Lebanon).

Her work revolves around social and political stories in the Middle-East region. Her photography explores the notions of refugees, borders, legal documents and the power they have in changing people’s lives. She has also been documenting the aftermath of the several wars she has witnessed while growing up in Lebanon.

In 2005 Khamissy worked as a picture editor for the Associated Press in Beirut and quit after the Israeli offensive on Lebanon in 2006.

Since then she has been a full-time photographer documenting the aftermath of Lebanon’s wars, her country’s contemporary and social issues, in particular those concerning women rights. She is presently based in Beirut, Lebanon.

Khamissy’s work has been published in Aperture Magazine, Eyemazing, Bite Magazine (previously known as The Black Snapper), Monocle, Financial Times, Le Monde, Wall Street Journal, MERIP, Le Nouvel Observateur, IRIN, Nox, Skin, Zawaya and Transit Beirut amongst others… Her images were also published in several catalogues for the UNEP, UNHCR, Italian Cooperation, Aleppo’s Photo Festival and Regards des Photographes Arabes Contemporains by the Institut du Monde Arabe amongst others.

 

Dalia Khamissy‘s work has been exhibited extensively in the Middle East region. Her solo exhibitions include: ‘Abandoned Spaces’ at Centro Andaluz de la Fotografia (Almería, Spain, 2010); ‘Abandoned Spaces’ at the 2nd International Festival of the Freedom of Expression (Cadiz, Spain, 2010); ‘Abandoned Spaces’ at the 3rd Granada ‘Cines del Sur’ Festival (Granada, Spain, 2009).

Her collective exhibitions include: ’15 Minutes Exhibition’ slideshow which toured in Brazilian photo festivals (FotoFestPoa, PARATY EM FOCO, DeVERcidade) and at 1500 Gallery (New York City, USA, 2010); ’12 Angry Lebaneses’ at UNESCO Palace (Beirut, Lebanon, 2009); ‘Six Books Six Bridges’ (Beirut, Lebanon, 2009); ‘Abandoned Spaces’ at 10th Aleppo Photo Festival; ‘Regard des Photographes Arabes Contemporains’ at MAMA (Algiers, Algeria, 2008); Art Dubai with The Empty Quarter Gallery (Dubai, UAE, 2008).

Dalia Khamissy is represented by The Empty Quarter Gallery (Dubai, UAE) and the Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía in Almeria (Spain). Her photographs are in the permanent collection of the Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris, France).
